This club is a persimmon socket head and finished in a Rosewood stain, across the crown is wrote R.Simpson Carnoustie, the Lead back weight is securely in position, the face lines have been re-cut also a Full wrap around sole plate fixed with 6 square drive steel screws and a Rams Horn insert on the leading edge, on the Shaft is stamped R.Simpson Maker Carnoustie, Made In Scotland. Research tells us that R.Simpson Carnoustie was one of the really great clubmakers, he was born in Elie in 1862 but is associated more with Carnoustie where he was the professional between 1891 and 1898 and where he established his clubmaking business sometime before this. He began his clubmaking apprenticeship aged 16 with George Forrester and, on it completion, went to work for Robert Forgan in St Andrews. Although not yet 21, he applied for the position of clubmaker with the Dalhousie Club and, out of forty applicants, was successful. He was soon joined in the business by two of his brothers Jack and Archie. This Club is in good playable condition with a new Grip and Wax coated thread use for the whipping then finished with Shellac to protect it from any bag damage that may occur.
