Alexander Neish Weir was born in Dunnichen by Forfar in Angus in 1871 and learned his trade locally with Simpson of Carnoustie and James Winton of Montrose. He became the first clubmaker at Elliot Golf Course in Arbroath in 1898 before the links had been secured, in perpetuity, for the people of the burgh.
He moved to Cruden Bay where he was professional from 1900 to 1905 and to Turnberry where he served from 1906. He died on 31 December 1910, sadly by his own hand, leaving a wife and three children.
He played in the Open Championships of 1903, 1905 and 1910.
He registered a non-slicing driver and brassie in 1907 and was awarded a diploma for this at the first golf exhibition at Deal.
